Workers' compensation in the Kansas City metro

Overview

What workers' compensation is really for

Missouri generally requires workers' compensation once you have five employees, and one employee if you are in construction. Kansas requires it for nearly all employers above a low payroll threshold. The penalties for going without are severe and personal.

Workers' compensation is priced on payroll by class code, modified by your experience rating. Two things reduce your cost: accurate class codes and a real safety program. We help with both.

What the policy includes

The coverages we build into every quote, plus the endorsements that matter in this metro.

How we place it

Four steps from your current policy to a better-fitting one.

  1. 1

    Map your class codes

We audit your job descriptions against the governing class codes. Misclassification is the most common cost error we find.

  2. 2

Pull loss runs and your mod

Three to five years of claims plus your experience modification factor.

  3. 3

    Shop the right markets

Appetite for roofing, trucking and staffing differs enormously by carrier and changes every year.

  4. 4

    Set up audit and safety

We schedule payroll reporting correctly and connect you with the carrier's loss control resources.

Why clients choose us for this

  • Class-code audit that often finds overcharges
  • Experience modification explained in plain language
  • Pay-as-you-go billing options to protect cash flow
  • Help preparing for the year-end audit before it arrives

What moves the price

Class codes
Each job function has a rate per $100 of payroll. Clerical and field staff rate very differently.
Payroll
The exposure base. Estimated up front and audited at the end of the term.
Experience modification
Your claims history compared with similar employers, applied as a multiplier.
Safety program
Documented training, written safety plans and drug-free workplace programs earn credits.
State
Missouri and Kansas have different statutes and rating bureaus, which matters for multi-state crews.

Workers' compensation questions

If your question is not here, call the office. You will reach a licensed agent in Kansas City, not a queue.

Generally at five or more employees, and at one or more for construction industry employers. Kansas requires it for most employers above a modest annual payroll. We will confirm your specific obligation before quoting.

Missouri and Kansas both allow certain owners and officers to elect out. Electing out lowers premium but removes their benefits, so it is a real decision, not a formality.

A multiplier comparing your claims history with similar employers. Below 1.0 reduces premium, above 1.0 increases it. It is also a prequalification hurdle on many commercial job sites.

Only if they genuinely are independent contractors with their own coverage. Uninsured subcontractors are usually picked up on your audit as employees, which produces large unexpected bills.
